Adventures in Bulk Food Shopping

Katie and I have found a ton of inspiration from the Zero Waste Home, a blog that focuses on eco-friendly solutions to a trash-producing lifestyle. Katie created her own kids’ lunch bags and I’ve been composting a majority of our kitchen waste, plus making my own granola and yogurt. The blog is a big supporter of bulk shopping — including bringing your own containers — so on a recent trip to Whole Foods, I decided to try this out myself.

I’ve been shopping in the bulk section for a while but have usually used their plastic containers and bags. I already bring my own shopping bags, so why not bring a few containers as well?

The first thing I did at the store was to weigh my jars on the scales in the produce section. I wrote the weight on the jar with a Sharpie I brought from home. My thought was that the person at the check-out counter could subtract the weight of the container from the total weight to get the accurate price of the items.

I filled up my jars with dried fruit, coffee beans, and rolled oats.  Then, I hit up the baker for a loaf of bread. He didn’t bat an eyelash when I asked him to put it in my kid-decorated pillow case.

With a smile, he handed me the sticker to put on the outside for check-out. Sweet!

But when I got to the check-out line and proudly lined up my containers, I watched as the check-out person become completely flummoxed — he was charging me for the weight of the cannisters AND the items. Imagine my shock when I found out a pound of coffee beans rang up to be over $30!

As I debated the obscene prices with the check-out person, the line behind me grew to two and then three (restless and annoyed) shoppers deep. Finally, the customer service rep came over and told me if I wanted to bring my own containers, I needed to first stop by the customer service desk so they can weigh the containers and mark them. Lesson learned.

After the “incident” at Whole Foods, I also stopped by MOM’s Organic Market to check out their bulk offerings. Before shopping, I made sure to stop at the customer service desk first.

To make things run more smoothly at the the check-out line, the employee pushes a button for “tare” (the net weight) and enters the bulk item number and the weight. The computer does the rest.

It’s amazing the range of items you can buy in bulk: spices, grains, nuts, raisins, rice, beans, flour, oats, cereal, honey, oil, salt. The list goes on. You can get milk in glass bottles that you pay a deposit for; then, you bring the bottle back and you get your deposit back on the next bottle you buy.

Tips for Shopping with Your Own Containers

  • Remove old labels from your jars, especially the bar codes so the scanner doesn’t detect it.
  • The label should only show the weight of the empty container  (tare) and the ID number of the item.
  • Avoid heavy containers and glass, which will be harder to carry home. You can always transfer the items to nice-looking jars when you get home. Keep standard plastic containers to use for shopping for, say, raisins or coffee.

Holiday Shopping for the Del Ray Gent

Still looking for that perfect gift for the special gent in your life? Perhaps these gift ideas and personas will match that hard-to-shop-for guy on your list. You’ll find all of these items (and more) at shops right here in Del Ray.

The Coach

He coaches your children’s sports teams. All of them. Both kids. Practice two-three times a week, games on Saturday and Sunday. He balances overlapping schedules, carpools, and the expectations and dreams of sideline parents.

(1) Thank him for giving up his me-time by making a book of the year’s best sports moments – ask other parents to pitch in their candid shots.
(2)
Treat him to a much-needed massage at Vital — Fall soccer season may be over, but Winter indoor soccer is right around the corner.
(3) Buy some vintage barware at Potomac West or Not Too Shabby and a sports-themed bottle opener at Kiskadee.
(4)
Give him a dapper hat from Amalgamated Clothing and Dry Goods to replace his grungy baseball cap — something a little nicer to wear when he’s out for guy’s night at the local watering hole.

The Dude

He’s low-key, old school and somewhat crunchy. An English major with a minor in philosophy, he enjoys music, casual attire and a good dark beer. He used to ride his bike to metro to get to his 9-5 job downtown — not to get in shape or because it’s eco-friendly — because it’s what he’s been doing since college. He’s a creature of habit, enjoys the simple things. But in recent months his bike has fallen into a state of disrepair and it’s been sitting in the basement waiting to get fixed.

(1) Create a gift box with a selection of 20 oz. bottles of beer like this mellow black and tan from Market 2 Market.
(2)
Give him a gift card to VeloCity Bike Coop where he can pick out a refurbished bike (and support a good cause at the same time), perfect for commuting.
(3) Select one of the cozy and well-cared for flannels and a (4) Vintage radio from Amalgamated Clothing and Dry Goods to enjoy on lazy Sunday afternoons.

The Joker

He’s outgoing, confident and gets along with everyone. His style can be eccentric, flashy, almost comic. In fact he’s a huge collector of vintage Spiderman comics and won’t divulge what he spent on his latest find on ebay. His love for comics comes out in his quirky interior design leanings and fashion sense which he looks forward to flaunting at the annual new year’s party, his signature event.

(1) Stop by the Exotic Planetarium and Comic Emporium and browse the vast collection of comics — perhaps you’ll find one he doesn’t already have.
(2) Add to his quirky art display with some originals available at Potomac West and Not Too Shabby (assuming you don’t have a terrifying fear of clowns).
(3) Pick up a vintage party book and (4) Some funky wingtips from Amalgamated Clothing and Dry Goods – he’ll look dashing at the new year’s party this year.

Are there any hard-to-shop-for men on your list? What have you found here in Del Ray?

Holiday Shopping at Potomac West Antiques

Potomac West Antiques along with their sister store Not Too Shabby Consignments is having their annual sale this Saturday, December 8 from 10am-6pm. With 10 percent off all merchandise, it should definitely be a stop for your holiday shopping and decorating needs. Leslie and I stopped by Potomac West last week to browse the merchandise. Here are some of our favorite finds.

For the tea lover on your list, check out this rustic wood caddy. Fill with different flavors of tea, add a bow, and you’re done. Pair with a homemade mug from A Show of Hands or Clay Queen Pottery just down the street. I could also see this used to store jewelry, loose change, business cards or desk accessories.

Vintage tins can be found throughout the shop — consider using one of these as a gift box (add a ribbon, no wrapping paper required) with a gift card inside for one of our many local restaurants and shops. The gift recipient can reuse the tin however they please, so it’s really two gifts in one.

Sports fan will enjoy vintage pennants and equipment (look carefully and you might even find one for your favorite team or destination). I know a few guys who would gladly welcome one of those well-worn baseball gloves to their collection.

Leslie and I debated if someone could safety use an old golf club, but one with this much character would be better on display than on the green.

This handsome clock will definitely make a statement in someone’s home or office. Right now you can find it by the front window, but walk around the shop because you’ll find more mid-century marvels upstairs and down.

Including lots of fun bar accessories — glasses, decanters, and swizzle sticks galore.

Tucked in the corner, Leslie found a couple more options for decanters. The one on the left is simple and elegant and has a top. While the one on the right doesn’t have a top, it does have a fabulously ornate pattern. My vote is for the one on the right. I’d probably use it as a bud vase.

Leslie also found a pristine set of bar tools. Shiny chrome will fit right in on a Mad Men-inspired bar cart.

I’m loving this set of four cocktail glasses. A toast on new Year’s Eve perhaps?

For your epicurean friends, I like the idea of giving a couple vintage cookbooks along with a new apron, crisp tea towels or other linens and kitchen gadgets.

vintage cookbooks

Speaking of linens, this tablecloth is seasonally appropriate without being too holiday specific. If it’s too small for your table, it can be layered with a larger tablecloth, maybe using the red and green in the flowers.

Gold elephant bookends are handsome in a formal office or den, but wouldn’t they be darling on a child’s bookshelf flanking copies of Dumbo, Babar, Horton Hears a Who and other animal-friendly classics? You could spray paint them, but I think the gold color is good to go.

We spotted a few classic children’s books upstairs too. This copy of Alice in Wonderland has a little wear and tear, but I doubt my kids would even notice it’s not a “new” book.

Lots of books for the literary types on your list too including an eight-volume collection of classic short stories.

I’m really excited about these ornate sconces with shimmering crystals. They would look lovely in practically any room in the house.

It’s fun to compare the old film cameras to the digital ones today. And even if you don’t end of using them to take photos, they make nice decorative pieces.

And finally, globes! A classic educational tool that looks great in the home as well. I bought a globe last year at the sale and we love it in our home. This one is rather large, so make sure you measure your space first.

Potomac West is located at 1517 Mt. Vernon Avenue and Not Too Shabby is right next store at 1515 Mt. Vernon Avenue in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Va.
