MV Big Flea: Bargain Shopping and “Junque” Dropping

Well, another Saturday, another MV Big Flea Shop ‘n Drop. Last weekend I made a quick stop to the new location (next door to the old location in Arlandria) to drop off an old bookcase and see what treasures had been added since my last visit. I’m currently in the process of some serious Spring decluttering and I’ll be mostly “dropping” for the time being. But if you’re ripe for “shopping” here are some of the highlights from last Saturday’s shindig.

Chairs. Lots and lots of chairs. This vintage rocker/glider needs some new fabric  – I imagine a froggy green or deep red velvet — but she’s got good bones and a regal style.

Here’s something you don’t see every day. This chrome chair (left) has a unique physique and a pristine white vinyl seat. Would be nice in a teenager’s room or as a dining chair in an eclectic-styled house. And on the right, yet another memory from Bungalow (formerly on the Ave). Can you picture an Ikat or Indian-designed cushion to brighten its aged wood?

I’ve got lots of ideas for this small old suitcase — a handy storage container for doll clothes or art supplies, mounted on the wall sideways as a secret storage shelf with a mirror attached to the inside, or as a handsome container for mail and bills on a console table by the front door.

And speaking of tables, this one is not too shabby either. I’ll be honest, it has a little damage, but that could possibly be repaired with some furniture cleaner/polish. Or, if you’re feeling bold, paint it a sunny yellow and put on a covered porch. Add a couple of small chairs and you have a cozy bistro corner to enjoy lemonade, coffee or a springtime cocktail with a friend.

This storage box had me baffled but I’m going to guess that it’s for storing cassette tapes. Since those are ancient history in my house at least, I’d probably use it to hold matchbox cars. Or turn on its back and fill with art supplies — pens, markers, colored pencils, pastels organized by color and size.

Moving on to the bedroom furniture department, this vintage vanity/dresser really caught my eye. I love the rounded edges, the stylish drawer pulls, and the art deco charm. Instead of using it in a bedroom, I see it as a console under a wall-mounted tv. The drawers would be perfect for hiding living room accessories — games, videos and kids’ toys — and magazines and wandering remotes would stack neatly in the middle.

Also in the bedroom sector, here’s a fabulous solid wood bed frame (probably full or queen, if you’re interested). You could paint her for a French country/cottage feel, but I think she’s perfectly wonderful just the way she is.

Don’t mind the Big Gulp and the awkward camera angle, this gorgeous trunk is actually really large and probably weighs about a thousand pounds. Worn, weathered, and well-travelled, it’s one of those storage pieces that would be great for out of season items (so you don’t have to open it often) – Winter coats in the Summer, outside toys in the Winter, etc. I’d take him home with me if only I had the space and the upper body strength.

And finally, my beloved tinker toys. I had to say no for now (with deep regret as I drove away), but if they are still available after I get my wreck of a basement cleaned out, I may have to make an offer.

So there you have it. Some of the latest and greatest finds from the Big Flea Shop n’ Drop. Don’t worry, you can shop and drop every Saturday up until the main event — the Big Flea on May 5, 2012. DIY Del Ray will be there every step of the way — your eyes and ears for all the sweet deals and treasures to reinvent or repurpose.

If you have questions about what to donate, dates and times for the next Shop ‘n Drop, or even if you want to volunteer, check out the Big Flea Web site. All proceeds from the Big Flea support the Mount Vernon Community School PTA.

More DIY Inspiration from the MV Big Flea Shop ‘N Drop

The Mt. Vernon Big Flea is a huge fundraiser that benefits the Mt. Vernon Community School PTA located in Del Ray. The MV Big Flea takes place in May, but work is well underway to ensure a successful event, including a Shop ‘N Drop last weekend. Like the name suggests, anyone can come to the Shop ‘N Drop to purchase items already donated or to drop off household items for sale.

Last weekend, I volunteered at the second (of many) Shop ‘N Drops, helping to unload and sort merchandise. DIY Del Ray posted about the first Shop ‘N Drop a few weeks ago. Like the last time, I got a sneak peek at the bargains. These are some of the fine items that caught my eye this time around.

There’s some mystery inherent in this box. What is its true purpose in life? It looks like something that belongs on a boat, but it just begs to be used in the house or garden in a creative way, wouldn’t you agree? The other volunteers and I contemplated its potential as a hanging storage shelf (farmhouse chic?) in the kitchen or as a garden planter. Or a Cub Scout could maybe add some wheels to engineer a soapbox derby car.

Great color, great shape, and perfect for small spaces, this corner desk belongs in a child’s room. I’d take it if I didn’t have a closet-to-office reno going on for my daughter. I could see it in a different color in a main living area to serve as a writing/bill paying desk too. My guess is that it will be snatched up right quick at the next Shop ‘N Drop if not the actual sale.

I couldn’t resist unpacking this Japanese sushi and tea set. It’s missing a couple of tea cups, which is a shame, but the set is worth buying if only for the teapot. You can use the miso bowls, chopstick holders, and plates as intended, and then repurpose the tea cups as dainty storage containers on your desk — for, say, paperclips, found buttons, or pennies.

Fellow volunteer, Suzanne, snagged this chic patent leather travel case for her 10-year-old daughter. The Eiffel Tower zipper pull takes it to a whole new level of sophistication, no?

How could I resist snapping a picture of something made from corks. But what is it? Someone definitely had a bulletin board in mind. It comes with a half a dozen push pins. What’s with the shape? Maybe it perfectly surrounds a wine rack that’s also packed in one of the numerous boxes at the Big Flea. Only time will tell.

There’s plenty more bargains and DIY inspiration in store from here until May. The next Shop ‘N Drop will take place in March. It will all lead up to the main event — the HUGE flea market spectacular — on May 5, 2012. For dates and more details, visit the Mt. Vernon Big Flea website. Whether you want to shop or drop, we hope to see you there!

Last weekend, Leslie and I volunteered at the Shop ‘N Drop, helping to unload and sort merchandise.

And, as an added bonus, it gave us the opportunity to get a sneak peek at the bargains — and you know we love a good bargain.

With treasures behind each corner, I think we only saw about half of the merchandise. But as we dug through boxes and bags, a few things caught our eyes.

We weren’t really sure what this was, but think it could possibly be a wall hook for a quilt or tapestry. I imagine it hanging in a long hallway with a fresh coat of paint and additional decorative knobs for hats, bags, coats, and other outdoor accessories.

There were a pile of these random items — perhaps part of a shelf or table? When we turned them around, they seemed to resemble wall-mounted message boards. After a nice coat of paint, the recessed part could be filled with cork, a mirror, or chalkboard paint. Key hooks could be added to the bottom and the little slot would make an ideal shelf for cell phones, message pads, or sunglasses.

Whoever purchases this will also get a piece of Alexandria history — it’s a CD shelf from the old Olsson’s Books and Records store in Old Town. One of our fellow volunteers used to work at Olsson’s and acquired it when they went out of business. Its narrow shelves are great for CDs, DVDs, paperbacks, and kids’ board boards. And if you have a spot in your basement, use it to store canned goods, spice jars, or other dried kitchen staples. Look closely and you’ll see the metal label brackets still intact.

This Picasso print would be darling in a little girls’ room (perhaps with a new mat and frame). We regretfully had to leave this behind, but hope she finds a good home soon.

IMG_9055

If I didn’t already have enough munchkin chairs in my house, I would gladly purchase these. No modifications needed — their vintage charm is as cute as can be.

Another gem: these matching stools. One’s already been partially painted, but after some freshening up, they’d be perfect for tea parties, an outdoor picnic table, or in a kids’ art studio.

And speaking of art, these painted canvasses were one of several items donated by the former Bungalow Homewares store in Del Ray. In the store, they showcased Bungalow’s paint colors, but anyone could take them, paint over, or wrap in decorative fabric for inexpensive wall decor. Leslie and I stared at them for quite a while and finally came to the agreement one of us just had to get them. Leslie ended up buying them for her daughters — I can’t wait to see what they do with them.
