Summer Fun in Del Ray

Summer Fun in Del Ray

You don’t have to go far to find something fun to do this summer. Del Ray is always packed with activities. First Thursday street festivals sponsored by the Del Ray Business Association take place the first Thursday of every month along Mt Vernon Ave. Businesses will have activities for the whole family to enjoy. Now in its 11th season, you can watch a movie at Cinema Del Ray, our own outdoor movie theater sponsored by realtor Jen Walker. Shows start at dusk the third Saturday of each month (until September) on the Mt Vernon Rec Center Field. The Del Ray Music Festival returns on July 23 at the Pat Miller Square (corner of Oxford and Mt Vernon Ave.) New this year, Mt Vernon Ave. will be partially closed and there will be a beer garden at several outdoor restaurants. But if you want something a little more low-key, take a trip to a pick-your-own farm and stock up on seasonal fruit for delicious cocktails, desserts and jams. We love...

Touring Little Free Libraries Around Town

Touring Little Free Libraries Around Town

Lately I’ve noticed more and more Little Free Libraries (LFL) popping up around town. LFLs are handmade book exchanges — part of a worldwide network of more than 30,000 and growing — usually found on peoples’ curbs and open to anyone to take a book or leave a book. One afternoon, my daughter Nadja and I filled up a bag with books from home and set out to drop a book in each one, and maybe find a book or two for ourselves. A) Argyle Drive. This LFL library is just south of Monticello Ave. in Beverley Hills. How sweet and cheerful this one is! B) W. Windsor Avenue. Located near the corner of Braddock Road, you can’t miss this one’s bright pink paint. C) Cameron Mills Road. We got a tip on Instagram to look for a LFL at the Trinity United Methodist Church, and we’re so glad we did. This one is set back on the road and hard to spot, but so charming — it’s shaped...

Sarah and Scott’s Farmhouse Reno: Part 1

Sarah and Scott’s Farmhouse Reno: Part 1

Sarah and Scott, and their two young sons, live in a beautiful Del Ray farmhouse with an inviting wrap-around porch and a big yard. Sarah gave us a tour of her home, telling us about their exciting plans for remodeling and updating their kitchen and upstairs master bedroom, which we will return to view in the months to come. They love their home, but with two growing boys, they want to reconfigure some of the rooms to make better use of the space, as well as add some square footage to the kitchen and second floor. Their roof is a rich red in color, which is why the second floor in this photo has a pink tint from the reflected light. Sarah showed us the cool 3-D graphic rendering that their architect, Laura Campbell, gave them that shows the addition they’ll put on the second floor in the back. Sarah highly recommends working with Laura. “She is highly detailed,” she says, “and thinks about things from functional and aesthetic...
