A Shared Bedroom for Two Fun-Loving Little Boys

A Shared Bedroom for Two Fun-Loving Little Boys

My sons Jack (age 5) and Calvin (age 2) share a small bedroom. So far it has worked out fine and for the most part they seem to enjoy each others’ company. But the room itself has been in need of some updating for some time. The walls are dingy, storage space is lacking, and poor little Calvin doesn’t even have a bed. He didn’t like his toddler bed, converted from his crib, so instead he either sleeps on his mattress or snuggles up with his older brother. It’s cute, but I can’t imagine it’s very comfortable.      What has mainly kept me from redecorating their room is my trouble picking paint colors. And then I saw Sara’s sons’ shared bedroom and I knew I found the perfect color — Benjamin Moore granite. It’s an all ages kind of paint, cozy and playful for a little boy and sophisticated and mature for a young gentleman. After picking the paint, my husband and I looked for new beds. Not only...

Tried and True Paint Colors

Tried and True Paint Colors

Even though painting is one of the easiest ways to transform a room, we all agree selecting paint colors can be a daunting task. Pick the wrong color and you are out a good chunk of change and you’ve probably wasted an entire day. I’ve been there many a time. Although testing samples is a good idea, I tend to use colors recommended by friends — always good to know a tried and true color. So with that in mind, if you’re thinking of painting a room or even a piece of furniture, here are the paint colors we’ve featured on the blog so far. Have a favorite color? Send the name and a picture to diydelray[at]yahoo.com. Benjamin Moore Laguna Blue I’ve fallen in deep paint love with laguna blue. Here it looks stunning with orange and white in this kitchen and dining room space. Delicious New Look for a Drab and Dated Kitchen

Delicious New Look for a Drab and Dated Kitchen

A couple of months ago we featured the fabulous color-coded bookcase designed by my friend Liz Cherry. Last week, I visited Liz again to take a tour of her renovated kitchen — the transformation is nothing less than remarkable. Liz and Cameron bought this 1940s cape as-is in 2009. Aside from repainting the walls and having the wood floors refinished, renovating the kitchen was a major priority. The kitchen came with an overdose of dark caramel colors. Those cabinets without doors (and not in a trendy open shelving kind of way) are awkward and confusing. And topping the list of weird features were the side-by-side ovens. The one on the left from the early 1990s didn’t work. The one on the right is the original and when it was used (yes  it still worked!) the outside got about as hot as the inside. It finally conked out, but not too soon for Liz to burn herself on multiple occasions. Don’t let its cool retro look deceive you. The layout was also awkward — a refrigerator...

A Bold Blue to Tie It All Together

A Bold Blue to Tie It All Together

There is definitely a mixture of stuff in my house — hand-me-downs, thrift/antique store finds, IKEA and Crate and Barrel purchases, craft projects, a few things found in the garbage, lots of kid toys. That sounds like the perfect recipe for a cool, eclectic look, but I have a hard time pulling it off. Recently, this room has really gotten me down. Even when there aren’t toys scattered everywhere, it just doesn’t feel right. It needs something to bring it all together. I didn’t want to get rid of any of my stuff (I love it all and each piece has a story), so I decided paint was my best option. Afterall, HGTV is always telling me the easiest way to transform a room is through paint. I must listen to my mentors. But my paint track record is not good. The room has been painted three times in seven years — first mustard (which lasted four years), then two shades of beige painted within a week of each other (I’m still getting slack...
