Christina and Brad’s Del Ray Rowhouse Remodel

Christina and Brad’s Del Ray Rowhouse Remodel

We love sharing before and after stories and we were thrilled when blog reader Christina contacted us about her upcoming rowhouse renovation and offered to let us track the project here. I visited Christina and her husband Brad at the beginning of April right after they had signed a contract with MW Construction to perform the work. Today we’re taking you on a tour of the “before state” of the house. Christina and Brad’s typical Del Ray rowhouse came with many assets: well-maintained hardwood floors, classic moldings and trim, neutral paint, loads of light from large windows and a tree-lined friendly street. But it also came with the classic conundrum, a cramped and dated galley kitchen. Christina and Brad have lived in the house for a few years now, and for a couple who likes to entertain and bake, the kitchen just doesn’t work. Despite the lack of counter space, the one saving grace is a small addition off the back that came with the house. Christina and Brad...

Renovating a Vintage 1940s Home, Part 1

Renovating a Vintage 1940s Home, Part 1

The next time we show you this house, it will be a lot different. Why? It’s the upcoming renovation project of local contractor Mary Denby (whose own home we showed here). Mary purchased the house with her business partner Kyle Blaylock of Blaylock Design and Build. They are giving the vintage 1940s home a top-to-bottom transformation that will celebrate its classic style while also adding new features including a modern kitchen and master bedroom suite. Stepping inside the front living room and admiring the stately brick fireplace, the layout seems pretty traditional. But upon closer look, you realize there’s something unique about this house. Off to the right, this side of the house was originally designated for live-in servants who had their own bathroom, living room and stairs to the bedroom on the second floor. What looks like a closet in the far left of this photo is what’s left of the original servant stairwell (since removed). The main level servant’s bathroom has all original fixtures and tile. During...

Home Tour: J.P. and Ellen’s Modern, Creative Row House

Home Tour: J.P. and Ellen’s Modern, Creative Row House

We’ve been hinting for weeks of this home tour with J.P. and Ellen, whose fun, modern style we glimpsed on our tour of Rock of Ages Music (ROAM), and when we featured the DIY industrial pipe shelving in their home, and finally their display of vintage postcards – a most unique and charming take on the traditional wedding guestbook. Today, we share a room by room tour of the Del Ray row house they recently bought and redecorated. Let’s start with the real estate “before” photo: Today, the exterior has a fresh new look, in grey, which stands out nicely on a street of red brick houses, one after the other. They also changed the door color from sunshine yellow to a more subdued lime green. (You can find a source list at the end of the post.) Living Room The front living room has a grey accent wall as well, but the rest of the room is white to let keep the space feeling as airy and open...

Dawn and Tim’s Port City Rental

Dawn and Tim’s Port City Rental

A few weeks ago, we shared the first in a series of posts about Tim and Dawn’s outdoor living space renovation. Things are moving along with the project and we’ll be back once there’s more to report. In the meantime, let’s take a look at the inside of their house, specifically the second floor apartment which they rent out through Vacation Rental By Owner (VRBO). The house is actually divided into two 2-bedroom units with a shared entryway. When they bought the house, they originally planned to convert it into a single family house and even had local contractor Mary Denby stop by to provide an estimate. The conversion was going to cost more than they were ready to spend, so they decided to keep the house as-is for now and gradually make improvements such as renovating the outside and finishing the basement. Dawn took advantage of a break between tenants and gave me a tour of the bright and sunny apartment last week. The rental apartment has a...
