The MV Big Flea Has Arrived

IMG_9050

It’s here! The event we’ve been waiting for all year long has finally arrived (no, not the cicadas, but yes, another kind of bug) — the MV Big Flea! Though work has been going on behind the scenes for several months now, the Big Flea main event takes place this Saturday, May 4, from 7 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center.

Since late last year, a die-hard and dedicated group of parents from Mount Vernon Community School’s PTA has curated quite a collection of merchandise to sell for the school’s biggest fundraiser of the year, which supports education enrichment activities for students and helps teachers secure much-needed supplies.

“One of the best things about the Big Flea is the fact that it has raised over $100,000 for the MVCS PTA and that it really does in the process help create a great sense of community amongst the parent/volunteers. We owe a great deal of thanks to the many volunteers and to the original founder of the Big Flea, Joe Lamountain,” says Big Flea parent/volunteer Art Witebsky.

The Big Flea relies upon community donations — household items, furniture, sporting equipment, toys, bric-a-brac galore — collected during shop ‘n drops starting at the end of last year. The ingenious part: you can actually purchase the items right away (thus the “shop” in shop ‘n drop), so a large portion of the profits is raised before the actual Big Flea event. It’s hard to believe when they opened the monthly shop ‘n drops in November 2012, they started with nothing.

Monthly shop ‘n drops turned into weekly shop ‘n drops, the empty store, empty no more. Clutter phobes like me rejoiced at the opportunity to get rid of stuff around the house and support a good cause at the same time.

Merchandise didn’t stay long — the good stuff was purchased right away, providing instant revenue and space for even more items.

Some things waited for just the right motivated DIYer to repurpose and renew.

Big Flea parent/volunteer Andrew Beaujon’s favorite flea item was “the one that got away — the item I didn’t buy and am still fascinated by,” a miniature Brazilian oven that someone donated last year. He says he doesn’t know what anyone would do with one of these things but it seems so perfect. “I’m still kind of kicking myself.”

All of this work wasn’t possible without volunteers — those who passed out fliers, helped keep the shop ‘n drops organized, drove around town on their days off work to pick up donations, and even some late night dumpster divers during Alexandria’s spring clean-up. (You didn’t have to twist my arm to do that, it’s more fun than it is work!)

Art Witebsky shared a funny story that happened after they sold a dresser found in the trash during Alexandria’s spring clean up: “We had just sold a dresser for $40 and were taking it out of the back door when the former owner came to make a donation at the shop. He said ‘oh my goodness I just put that out on the curb as trash.’ Just shows how amazing it is that the Big Flea can literally turn one person’s trash into money that goes towards the kids at MVCS.”

Not only is the Big Flea a huge fundraiser, it’s also a big community builder. Local businesses like M&T Bank have donated cash and Jack Taylor Toyota donated the “Big Flea Car,” which will be raffled to a lucky winner. You can purchase raffle tickets during this week’s First Thursday on the Avenue outside Del Ray Pizzeria.

From the community and local business donations to the dedicated volunteers (of all ages), the MV Big Flea is just another example of why Del Ray is such a wonderful place to live.

What will you find at the Big Flea? Come down to the Mount Vernon Recreation Center on Saturday, May 4, from 7 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and find out! The Recreation Center is located at 2701 Commonwealth Ave. in Del Ray next to Mount Vernon Community School. We can’t wait to find out what you take home!

Join Us at the Fabulous Fall Fundraiser

Take one incredible backyard, really delicious food from local chefs, and a group of generous and supportive neighbors and you have the makings for a fabulous fall party. The Fabulous Fall Fundraiser is happening this weekend in Del Ray (November 3, 6-9 pm) and we want to see you there!

The event is one of the Mount Vernon Community School PTA’s biggest fundraisers. Last year’s event was a rousing success and once again we can’t wait to dine on the food catered by Evening Star Cafe, La Strada and Del Ray Cakery.

Black Couch Brewery will provide its locally brewed beers and Monarch Title will donate other beverages. There will also be an outdoor lounge with several bonfires and live Latin jazz. Sounds intriguing, right?

So why should you be interested in the MVCS fundraiser if you don’t have kids at MVCS? Simple: The event will take place at one of the amazing homes from the 2012 House and Garden Tour. Chock full of DIY creativity and ingenuity, this was one of our favorite spots on the tour. If you missed the tour, or just want a second look, here’s your chance to see a true Del Ray delight.

But if you’ve been reading DIY Del Ray for a while, you’ve probably already gotten a sneak peak at the house. Earlier this year we featured the enchanting girls shared bedroom, a marvel of kid-friendly interior design, storage and organization.

Leslie recently wrote about homeowner Christi’s mosaics (seen throughout the Alexandria area). At the fundraiser you may even get an up-close look at her stunning backsplash and staircase — inspiration for your own mosaic project perhaps. Many more surprises await inside.

This climbing structure is a recent addition to the backyard. Can’t wait to see how they decorate it for the evening. At last year’s fundraiser this area housed the bar and a display of the many items up for raffle.

This year’s raffle prizes include:

Look carefully around the backyard for other ideas to replicate in your outdoor space such as these hanging baskets attached to a bench — great for small and large gardens and patios.

The weather forecast looks perfectly autumnal, ensuring a fabulous night to enjoy delicious food and drink and support our kids and community. Hope to see you there!

Tickets are $30. Proceeds will support technology and literacy programs at MVCS and help the PTA create a vibrant and enriching place for students to learn. To purchase tickets and for additional information, visit http://www.mvcspta.org

Nominate a Home for the 2012 Del Ray House and Garden Tour

Editor’s Note: Nominations for the 2012 House and Garden Tour are closed.

If you’ve read this blog before, you know we love a good home tour. Who doesn’t enjoy checking out other room layouts and design schemes, drooling over marvelous tile and shiny appliances, and getting inspiration for the next renovation project.

We’re so excited that the biannual 2012 Del Ray House and Garden Tour (sponsored by the Del Ray Citizens Association) is right around the corner. We remember the last tour fondly — racing by bike to each stop, giddy with anticipation of what incredible feature the next home would unveil.

We recently met up with the chairs of the House and Garden Tour and found out they are seeking nominations for the 2012 tour (May 19, 2012). If you know of a home that has unique architectural interest, historical significance, a noteworthy renovation, or an awe-inspiring garden, now’s the time to speak up. Send a brief description of why the house (yours or someone else’s) should be nominated to Virginia.amos@verizon.net by February 15, 2012.

We’ll be showing sneak previews and highlighting features from the homes leading up to the tour date. In fact, we’ve already written about two of the homes we visited in the last tour:

We also wrote about a home that will likely appear in the 2012 tour and we’ll let you know which one when the final list comes out. Until then, you’re welcome to guess!

Proceeds from the tour benefit the Del Ray pocket park on the corner of Commonwealth and Del Ray Avenues. The park opened in August and is bustling with children on any given day. But additional funding is needed to complete the park.

Future plans include a plaza, pathway extension, drinking fountain, tables, and additional landscaping. Since the idea for the park took hold, Del Ray Patch has been doing a great job documenting the progress.

Hope to see you at the  Del Ray Home and Garden Tour on May 19, 2012! Tickets will go on sale in April on the Del Ray Citizens Association site.

2011 Art on the Avenue Favorite Finds

Another year, another amazing Art on the Avenue. Despite rain and cold temps, the spirit of Del Ray prevailed. Thanks to Pat Miller and all the volunteers who make this annual event such an incredible success.

I actually took three trips to the festivities — first a preview during an early morning jog as the artists were setting up, then with my family in tow during the lunch time rain, and finally a solo mission to take some pics of my favorite finds when the rain took an afternoon break.

Although I didn’t capture everything, here’s a round-up of some of my favorite finds. You can find contact information for the artists on the Art on the Avenue website. For more photos, check out the 2011 Art on the Avenue flickr group.
