Kelly’s House of Murals

Kelly’s House of Murals

Kelly grew up in a house decorated with her mother’s hand-painted murals. Today, in her Del Ray home, she’s continuing the tradition. I stopped by to see these special murals painted by Kelly’s mother (you may remember this house from the Del Ray House & Garden Tour this year, or the previous tour in 2014). There’s a splendid mural of blue sky and clouds on the ceiling of the front porch. The other two murals are in the two kids’ rooms. This one pays homage to a children’s book author and illustrator that Kelly loved as a child, Gyo Fujikawa. Kelly’s mom added Superwoman, one of her daughter’s favorite super heroes, into the design. Kelly’s son’s room has been transformed into a scene from outer space, complete with flying spaceships. I can only imagine how much he and his sister love their rooms and will grow to appreciate their grandmother’s artistic talent all their...

A Mid-Century Nursery for Baby Mera

A Mid-Century Nursery for Baby Mera

After featuring J.P. and Ellen’s mid-century modern design style in a 2014 home tour, we couldn’t wait to come back and see what they did with their newborn baby Mera’s bedroom. Just like the rest of their stylish home, they accented the room with mid-century charm and personal touches, perfect for a baby girl. The collection of prints in uniform white frames shown to the right of the window above are an assortment of prints that Ellen picked out, as well as cards her friends and family gave her at their baby shower. “I hate tossing beautiful cards,” Ellen says, “and I feel that sticking them in a box in a closet is basically the same thing.” So she framed them. What a great idea. One wall was painted a handsome blue-grey hue when they moved in a few years ago. Unfortunately, they don’t have the name to share. (They had Home Depot match the color so they could use it throughout the room.) Ellen found the mid-century dresser...

Sara and Aaron’s Handmade Home Decor

Sara and Aaron’s Handmade Home Decor

While staying with my friends Sara and Aaron in Madison, WI, during the weekend I photographed their wedding, I marveled at all of the lovely handmade projects in their home. When I wrote about her DIY wedding decor, I mentioned this sweet cross-stitch that Sara’s sister made with a San Francisco setting that has meaning for the couple. Also upstairs, Sara and her mother hand-stitched an ocean scene on a white shower curtain for the kids’ bathroom. It really is fabulous and took a lot of time not only to design and cut out the fabric for the jellyfish, scuba divers, assorted tropical fish, and waves, but to blanket stitch each one into the scene. In Sara and Aaron’s kitchen, Sara’s mother also knit these darling laced curtains. This is not an easy pattern to follow, but Sara’s mother has the talent and patience it takes for challenging handiwork, which we know from the dozens of doilies she knitted for the reception tables for Sara and Aaron’s wedding (with her...

Dawn and Tim’s Living Room Expansion: The Reveal

Dawn and Tim’s Living Room Expansion: The Reveal

The last time we checked in with Tim and Dawn, they were in the process of moving a wall to make their living room more spacious. Today we’re back to show you the stunning after photos. The whole project started when Tim and Dawn wanted to make room for the perfect Red Barn Mercantile sectional. They also wanted to update the style of the room. Dawn organized her interior design ideas on a Pinterest board and consulted with Kay Sidahmed (at left below) from Oikasa, an interior designer and frequent contributor to DIY Del Ray, to help her realize her vision. Having spent so much time on the beach in Long Island as a child, Dawn’s design tastes lean toward whites, pale blues, sandy brown, shimmery silver, with a lot of natural fabric and texture. Standing in her living room with the diffuse light pouring in, you feel like you’re in a beach cottage. Kay offered several color choices to try on the walls. They were trying to find the perfect grey,...

Justine and Jonathan’s Art-Filled Home

Justine and Jonathan’s Art-Filled Home

I had the pleasure of touring Justine and Jonathan’s house to see their art collection, every piece with a meaningful back story. What I didn’t expect, but was not surprised to learn is how artistic Justine, Jonathan, and their two young children, Miles and Vivien, are in their own rights. We started in their living room to view the large oil painting they bought in a gallery in Florence, Italy, where they got married. They knew they wanted to buy a painting during their stay and they went into many galleries before they saw this painting and both loved it for the colors, the subject matter, and the overall style. Justine even still has a photograph that they had taken in the gallery with the artist. When they mentioned that they had just gotten married, he opened a bottle of wine, with a lot of fanfare, for them to share together in celebration. Over the mantle, Justine showed me a painting she and Jonathan bought together at the Torpedo...
