A Nepalese Tradition Comes to Del Ray

A Nepalese Tradition Comes to Del Ray

When photos of adorable dogs in Nepal decked in marigold garlands appeared in the news earlier this year, we thought it would be great to do something similar in Del Ray. After all, Del Ray is a haven for dogs. We imagined a parade of Del Ray dogs through town. On September 20, we honored Del Ray dogs in the Nepalese tradition called Kukur Tihar or Kukur Puja, the worship of dogs. While in the initial planning phase for the event, our friends at doggiewalker.com referred us to local Del Ray resident and dog lover Susan Walke. Susan lived in Nepal and participated in Kurkur Tihar so she had first-hand knowledge about how it works and strong ties to the local Nepalese community in our area. Several Nepalese community leaders celebrated with us and even donated all the marigold garlands that adorned each dog. We met at the Del Ray “Pocket Park” on the corner of E. Del Ray and Commonwealth Ave. where the dogs had a chance to...

Join Us! A Parade to Honor Dogs

Join Us! A Parade to Honor Dogs

On Sunday, September 20 at 3 p.m., we’re honoring a tradition observed in Nepal called Kukur Tihar, or Kukur Puja (worship of the dogs). Susan Walke, who served in the foreign service in Nepal and took part in the ceremony with her own dog, Mika, recently told us more about the Nepali tradition and is helping us plan the event. Just as they do in Nepal once a year, we’ll dress our dogs in marigold garlands, decorate their foreheads with colored powder (tika) and give them delicious treats. In Nepal, families perform these rituals at home, but here we will gather together and take our dogs on a parade through the neighborhood. We’ll start at the Del Ray Pocket Park on the corner of E. Del Ray and Commonwealth where we’ll decorate the dogs. Then, we’ll walk together through town to the Simpson Dog Park. There, we’ll mingle with members of the Nepali community and meet organizers of the Simpson Park renovation project, while our dogs romp and play...

DIY Pets: Cat Toys from Old Sweaters

DIY Pets: Cat Toys from Old Sweaters

Once again, I’m putting an old felted wool sweater to use. (I’ve used them before to make a dog sweater, holiday ornaments, and a door wreath.) This time, I used some of the wool to make little fish-shaped cat toys filled with catnip or catmint that is growing by leaps and bounds on my back patio. I dried a bunch in the house and then chopped it up to use in the toys. I also gathered some red felt, colorful roving, a needle felting tool, jingle bells, and embroidery thread and needle for sewing the pieces together. Without even measuring, since precision is not the most important thing in a cat toy, I cut out fish shapes from the felt and sweater — two matching sides for each toy. Then, my daughters and I decorated the sides with embroidery thread and the wool roving to make a fish “skeleton” and some colorful eyes and “scales.” In the end, we had quite a variety of marine life to stuff and...

Pets on Location Part 2

Pets on Location Part 2

Last December we had our first installment of Pets on Location where we featured some of the beloved companions we see on photoshoots around town. Some of these never make it into the posts, but we love capturing photos of all of the members of each household, especially our dogs and cats. The second I got my camera out to take pictures of my kitchen renovation in January, sure enough, my two cats dashed into the room. Some pets sat patiently and happily alongside their owners on our visits. The mischievous ones had their hearts set on photo-bombing. While others were just interested in doing their own thing. Shortly after we took photos of this house for the 2014 House and Garden Tour, Loo Loo disappeared for two weeks, found later in a neighbor’s basement. The owners were so relieved to have him back home. And sadly some of the pets we met are now only with us in spirit, but their memory lives on. Thanks to all the...

Sponsor Shout-Out: Whole Dogz Holistic Day Care

Sponsor Shout-Out: Whole Dogz Holistic Day Care

As a dog owner, I’m always on the lookout for great dog-related businesses, so when Whole Dogz, the Alexandria holistic doggie daycare, boarding, and retail shop, expressed interest in advertising, I popped over for a tour to learn more about their business. Even though Whole Dogz  is a sponsor of DIY Del Ray, note that they did not compensate us for this post. My praise is entirely genuine when I say how impressed I was by their spacious and stylish space, the huge indoor play area and outdoor romping area, and the individual boarding suites where any dog would feel comfortable and happy sleeping and hanging out. Whole Dogz owner Mary Kenkel and her son, Patrick, Whole Dogz Manager, shared a vision of creating a safe and non-toxic place for dogs to play and relax while their owners are away for a day or for an extended period of time. Their canine guests receive filtered water and all-natural or organic food and treats. All the suites and play areas...
