The Alexandria Film Festival: Celebrating 10 Years

The Alexandria Film Festival: Celebrating 10 Years

The 10th annual Alexandria Film Fest kicks off tonight, with a line-up of more than 40 international and award-winning local, national, and international films in many genres. Screenings, special events and discussions will take place all over the city. “The Alexandria Film Festival began as an idea,” says one of the festival’s founders Margaret Wohler. “How can we create a welcoming space in the calendar for not just the film arts and filmmakers, but for the entire Alexandria community to come together and discuss topics in a civil and creative way? We welcomed many local and international filmmakers during those first years and have only grown since then. This year, we offer more than 40 films in high quality professional screening venues with 35 filmmakers attending. ” As an all-volunteer 501(c)3, the Alexandria Film Festival, “we have totally willed this thing into being,” she says, “with a bleary-eyed staff of volunteers and a few grants, for the the past 10 years. The third annual neighborhood lantern walk is coming up on Thursday night, November 3, at 6:15 p.m. This popular Del Ray event pays homage to a German tradition of Martinmas or St. Martin day celebration, bringing light and warmth into the night as we move towards the darkest days of the year. This year, Bellies & Babies is hosting a free lantern-making workshop for kids on October 28 from 4:30 to 6:30. Come make one or more lanterns for your family to carry in the walk! Space is limited. Please register on our Eventbrite page for the number in your party who will make a lantern. You don’t have to come for the full two hours, but keep in mind that it may take about 30-45 minutes to complete a lantern. All you need to bring is a glass jar. All other supplies are provided. Del Ray’s First Annual Chalk Painting Festival

Del Ray’s First Annual Chalk Painting Festival

Del Ray’s sidewalks came alive this past weekend with its first-ever chalk painting festival, La Bella Strada, which means “the beautiful street” in Italian. More than 22 artists and many families created masterpieces on the sidewalks of Mt. Vernon Avenue as neighbors and visitors looked on. Organized by the parents of students who attend The Del Ray Montessori School, the festival served as both a community event in town and a fundraiser to help the school with their New Building Fund. Businesses and individuals sponsored both 5 x 5 and 10 x 10 foot squares, and artists whose bios you can see here, generously donated their time and talent to the cause. The artists arrived bright and early and received a box of supplies, such as artist-grade chalk, spray bottles, and paint brushes. They set off to find their designated squares marked off with painters tape and got to work on executing their unique visions. They used many different techniques. Some used broad strokes on really large squares, others...
