Call to Artists: La Bella Strada Chalk Painting Festival

Call to Artists: La Bella Strada Chalk Painting Festival

The second annual chalk painting festival in Del Ray – La Bella Strada – is coming up on Saturday May 13 where Mt. Vernon Avenue turns into a giant gallery of vibrant chalk art. Do you want to participate as an artist or know anyone who does? The festival organizers are in search of a few more artists to share their talent. Artists receive Prang artist-grade chalk and other supplies to use to paint either a 5 x 5 foot or 10 x 10 foot square, sponsored by a local business. Artists also receive promotion on the event website and social media leading up to, during, and after the event. There’s a happy hour at Del Ray Artisans following the event to say thanks and give artists and event volunteers a chance to relax and swap stories from their day. Many of the artists who participated in the first annual La Bella Strada shared how much they loved the event and are coming back again. As one artist said,...

Register Now: Street Chalk Painting Workshop

Last May, The Del Ray Montessori School hosted La Bella Strada, an Italian street art festival, where professional and amateur artists from around the area created chalk masterpieces up and down Mt. Vernon Ave. The event is a fundraiser for the school. This year, La Bella Strada will take place on May 13 and all are welcome to participate. For anyone unfamiliar with chalk as an art medium, La Bella Strada organizers have arranged a chalk art workshop on April 29 led by local artist Patrick Kirwin. You’ve probably seen artist Patrick’s work all over Del Ray. And during the winter he painted several of the winter wonderland window scenes in shops along the Avenue. Last year, Patrick was also a featured artist at La Bella Strada, creating a magnificent hippo and a crocodile and...

Register Now: Kremena’s Sweet and Savory Pastry Class

You may know Kremena Stefanova as one of the friendly faces behind the counter at Del Ray’s Caboose Cafe or perhaps you’ve met her at the Four Mile Run Farmers Market where she sells her homemade Bulgarian baked goods. We’re excited to announce that Kremena will teach a pastry class for DIY Del Ray readers on Saturday, February 4 at 3 p.m. where you can learn some of her tried-and-true techniques. Kremena grew up in Bulgaria and learned to bake from her mother and grandmother. She moved to the U.S. in her early 20s, met her husband and they are now raising their family in Alexandria. When she started cooking for her kids, she says she wanted to make good, nutritious food, and soon decided to try making a go of having her own small business selling scones, croissants, crisps, bread sticks, granola, and strudels. At this one-hour class, Kremena will demonstrate how to make a butter dough and its variations that can be used for both sweet and...
