More Fab Finds from the MV Big Flea

More Fab Finds from the MV Big Flea

After last weekend’s donation drop off, the MV Big Flea storage facility at 444 Swann Ave. is busting with new merchandise! If you’re unfamiliar with the Flea, it’s an annual fundraiser for the Mount Vernon Community School. Volunteers collect unwanted furniture and household items and then resell them at a huge flea market at the Mt Vernon Rec Center on April 29. But you don’t have to wait until April 29 to snatch up the bargains. Just come to any of their donation drop offs (the next one is this Saturday, March 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) to browse the inventory. Here’s a peek at the vast selection we saw last weekend. There’s a ton of furniture, household items, appliances, toys, sporting equipment, lighting and electronics, garden supplies, vintage treasures and more — this is just the beginning. See something you like? Come to the showroom this Saturday or contact mvbigfleadonations@gmail.com — tell them you saw some fab finds on DIY Del Ray! Here’s the final Flea...

Latest Finds from the MV Big Flea

Latest Finds from the MV Big Flea

Since we last posted about the MV Big Flea in January, there is a ton of new merchandise at the storage unit on Swann Ave. Volunteers will be collecting donations of used furniture and household items until the end of April, when everything will be sold at the Mount Vernon Rec Center to raise money for the Mount Vernon Community School. There is a wide selection of furniture — antique, vintage and modern. Some items need a dusting, some a new coat of paint, others are ready to go as is. This vintage glider is truly amazing — the green vinyl is in excellent condition, the metal frame could just use a coat of paint. It also converts into a full-sized bed, perfect for a summer sleeping porch. And speaking of vintage, check out this kitchen table. It has chairs, but they need repairs to the seat cushions. The toy and homewares sections have exploded since our last visit too. This is only a fraction of what the Flea...

Get Ready for the MV Big Flea 2017

Get Ready for the MV Big Flea 2017

The annual MV Big Flea, which benefits the Mt Vernon Community School, is back and it wants to help you declutter. Now until mid-April, volunteers are collecting unwanted household items that they will sell at the big event on April 29 at the Mt Vernon Rec Center in Del Ray. This month, there will be two opportunities to donate: Sunday, January 8 from 12-3 p.m. and Sunday, January 22 from 12-3 p.m. at the storage facility located at 444 Swann Ave. Just look for the orange flea-made “fleahicle” on the corner of Swann and Route 1. But you don’t have to wait until April to shop for bargains. You can stop by the storage unit during drop-off times to buy anything that has already been donated. This includes dishes and small kitchen appliances, wall art and decorative items, toys and games, tools and hardware, bikes and strollers, and lots of furniture, ripe for the DIY eye. The Flea accepts pretty much anything that you’d find at a yard sale...

“Be the Light:” The Making of an Art Installation

“Be the Light:” The Making of an Art Installation

Today we welcome Nancy Belmont to share how the “Be the Light” display in Del Ray came to be… If you’ve been on Mt. Vernon Avenue in the evening over the past week, you may have noticed some extra energy. On Saturday, December 3, I launched, “Be the Light,” a new community art installation. The project asks visitors to think about the light inside of them, write an intention about how they can bring that light into the world, then light a candle to add to the display. Photo credit: Bill Coyle on Flickr “Be the Light” is my third interactive public art project over the past year and a half. (The first was the Courage Wall; the second was UNITY.) It was inspired by the idea that sometimes my light feels covered up by sadness, pain or heartbreak. I wanted to bring people together in a way that allows them to be vulnerable through anonymity. By creating a space where people can participate without sharing their identity, they...

Mindful and Merry Del Ray

Mindful and Merry Del Ray

From trees and garlands to window murals and light displays, anywhere you walk along Mt Vernon Ave. in Del Ray, you are reminded to be “mindful and merry” this holiday season. The Del Ray Business Association chose the “Mindful and Merry” theme this year and it is thoughtfully and creatively executed on every block. Local businesses sponsored the trees decorated by non-profits (you can vote for your favorite tree on the DRBA website before December 25). Several windows have been painted with winter wonderland scenes — some are still being painted and if you are lucky you may just catch an artist in action. It wouldn’t be Del Ray without something out of the ordinary as well. A stand-out this year is the custom-made “Be the Light” display, the work of Del Ray resident Nancy Belmont (more on this project later this week). And it’s all capped off with the giant tree at the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square, one of the merriest spots in...
