Summer Fun in Del Ray

Summer Fun in Del Ray

You don’t have to go far to find something fun to do this summer. Del Ray is always packed with activities.

First Thursday street festivals sponsored by the Del Ray Business Association take place the first Thursday of every month along Mt Vernon Ave. Businesses will have activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Now in its 11th season, you can watch a movie at Cinema Del Ray, our own outdoor movie theater sponsored by realtor Jen Walker. Shows start at dusk the third Saturday of each month (until September) on the Mt Vernon Rec Center Field.

The Del Ray Music Festival returns on July 23 at the Pat Miller Square (corner of Oxford and Mt Vernon Ave.) New this year, Mt Vernon Ave. will be partially closed and there will be a beer garden at several outdoor restaurants.

But if you want something a little more low-key, take a trip to a pick-your-own farm and stock up on seasonal fruit for delicious cocktails, desserts and jams.

We love these recipes for making the most of a bumper crop of fruit:

Don’t have time to travel to a farm? The farms come right to you every Saturday and Sunday morning at the Del Ray and Four Mile Run Farmers Markets.

Del Ray has plenty of outdoor parks to visit. Walk along the historic Mount Jefferson Greenway and soak in all its wild glory.

Explore the wonders of urban birding at Monticello Park.

Take in an evening of college baseball with the Alexandria Aces at Frank Mann Field.

Cool off with a dip at the Old Town Pool and other area water holes.

And always end the day with something cold such as custom-flavored ice cream, watermelon granitas or a classic summer cocktail.

  1. What is your favorite pick your own berry place?

    • These photos are from Bennett Orchards in Delaware, but Hollin Farms in Delaplane, VA has berries and is about an hour west of Del Ray. We’ve also heard great things about Butler’s Orchard in Germantown, MD. Make sure to call ahead before heading out.
