Del Ray’s First Annual Chalk Painting Festival
Del Ray’s sidewalks came alive this past weekend with its first-ever chalk painting festival, La Bella Strada, which means “the beautiful street” in Italian. More than 22 artists and many families created masterpieces on the sidewalks of Mt. Vernon Avenue as neighbors and visitors looked on.
Organized by the parents of students who attend The Del Ray Montessori School, the festival served as both a community event in town and a fundraiser to help the school with their New Building Fund. Businesses and individuals sponsored both 5 x 5 and 10 x 10 foot squares, and artists whose bios you can see here, generously donated their time and talent to the cause.
The artists arrived bright and early and received a box of supplies, such as artist-grade chalk, spray bottles, and paint brushes. They set off to find their designated squares marked off with painters tape and got to work on executing their unique visions.
They used many different techniques. Some used broad strokes on really large squares, others used water and paint brushes to make the chalk work like watercolor paint, and many used their hands for blending.
Crowds of people stood around the artists throughout the day, taking photos and marveling at the beautiful and inspired work.
And if you were there toward the end of the festival, you would have witnessed a gorgeous collection of finished work. To see more than the chalk paintings featured here, see the event Facebook page.
