Easy Seasoned Oyster Crackers
I heard about these seasoned crackers from my aunt a few years ago — a basic recipe using oyster crackers, dry ranch dressing mix and oil. When I went to make these, I didn’t like all the weird ingredients in the dressing mix (#2 ingredient was MSG). So I looked around and found this homemade salad dressing mix which would do the trick.
I gathered the following ingredients and pulsed them in my food processor:
1/2 cup powered buttermilk
1 T dried parsley
1 t dried dill
1 t garlic powder
1 t kosher salt
1 t onion powder
1/2 t granulated sugar
1/4 t black pepper
1/4 t cayenne pepper
For one batch of crackers, I mixed 6 t of dry ingredients with 1/4 cup olive oil until well blended.
Then, tossed in one 9-oz bag of oyster crackers, making sure the crackers were evenly coated.
I baked the crackers on a cookie sheet for about 18 minutes at 250 degrees. When they came out of the oven, they were golden, no longer oily, and coated with a dry herb mix that tasted cheesy.
I made two batches of crackers — plenty to package in hinged jars as part of holiday gifts. There’s still more mix left, which is good because once you start eating these, you can’t stop.
