Tis the Season for the MV Big Flea
For those of you who want to declutter before guests arrive this holiday season or those who are looking for bargains on gifts or DIY-ready furniture, look no further than the MV Big Flea.
The Big Flea is the huge annual fundraiser for Del Ray’s Mount Vernon Community School. (I am coordinating this year’s event so this is one of many posts you will probably see between now and the main event on April 25, 2015, at the Mount Vernon Rec Center.) The Flea collects furniture and household items and sells them to raise money for the school’s PTA.
Since the summer, we’ve been slowly collecting items and selling on the Big Flea’s Facebook page — we also held a pop-up yard sale in September. Everything we don’t sell online or at pop-up sales will be sold at the end of season sale in April. In past years we used an empty storefront in Arlandria to sell and store donations, but this year we don’t have access to the store, so we’re collecting items at a storage unit in Old Town and selling online.
New merchandise is posted daily on the Facebook page to include small and large bookcases, new and antique dressers and cabinets, tables and chairs in need of makeovers, kid toys and baby gear, and household goods galore. Here’s a few of the items we’ve posted — some are already sold, so visit the Big Flea Facebook page for the most recent items!
Nursery dresser in new condition (with a coordinating crib)
Handmade bookcase that comes apart in three sections
Vintage wood twin bed in good condition
Brio train table
Pottery Barn side table/nightstand
Kids rocking chair — just needs a cleaning and perhaps a coat of paint
Leather ottoman/storage cube
Well-maintained wood dresser — use as-is or give a fresh makeover
One of two Scandinavian dining chairs with leather seats
High-end TV cabinet — convert to a kids wardrobe or add shelving for a self-standing food pantry
Ikea bookcase — paint or add a backing for a custom look
Not everything gets posted on the Big Flea Facebook page — the inventory is too large to keep up with — but the good news is the Flea takes requests! Yes, you read that correctly. Need something specific, message the Flea volunteers or email firstname.lastname@example.org and they’ll look out for whatever it is you need.
Stay tuned for more updates about the Big Flea. Make sure you Like the Big Flea on Facebook for the latest news and incoming merchandise for sale.
