Rest and Relax at Maria’s VRBO
One step inside Maria’s Del Ray duplex and the soothing paint colors, eclectic mix of furniture, and friendly accents make you feel welcome and relaxed. And for good reason — Maria’s house is more than just her home, it’s part of an online network called Vacation Rental By Owner (VRBO.com) that enables homeowners to rent out their homes to anyone around the world.
For most of the year, Maria and her daughter live in the house, but by using VRBO they can rent it out when they are out of town and earn some extra money. Maria pays an annual fee for her listing to appear on the VRBO site and sets the calendar to specify when the house is available.
Maria says most of the people who stay in her house have relatives living in Del Ray, making this an attractive, affordable and convenient option for out-of-towners looking for accommodations other than a hotel in Old Town or Crystal City.
Maria’s style is to not buy “new” furniture. Most of the pieces in the house are from the MV Big Flea, thrift stores, flea markets and rescued from the side of the road. Maria has a great eye for pieces that still have life in them and can envision how to repurpose and make them look like new.
The raspberry couch was a curb find that her friend, Elizabeth Owens, recovered. Elizabeth also made outdoor cushions and the teal colored roller shades in the living and dining room.
Maria took the now polka dot chair and the black and white chair to Robinson’s on Mt Vernon Ave in Del Ray to be reupholstered.
The well-organized galley kitchen features plenty of storage and prep space, cork floors, granite counters, and professional grade appliances.
Step right outside and a bistro table awaits for you to enjoy the paper and your morning coffee.
Down below, there’s a second deck with a pair of Adirondack chairs (recently acquired from a curb on Hume St.).
And a flagstone pathway leads you to a third more secluded sitting area with a fire pit at the back of the deep, shaded yard.
Maria does all the landscaping herself, mixing shrubs and perennials with playful yard decor.
The second floor has two bedrooms (plus a third used for private storage) and a bathroom.
I love this idea for extra storage space over the door in the bathroom — it came with the house when Maria purchased it in 2012.
The two bedrooms accommodate guests comfortably — one with a queen and one with a full-sized bed — and include casual decor to make you feel at home.
