A Market Gift Basket ‘O Plenty
In preparation for my trip to Charlottesville, I wanted to assemble a gift basket for my weekend hosts. Originally, I had big plans to make some homemade goods, but ran out of time. So the next best thing to homemade is… the Del Ray Farmers Market, of course!
First I started with something healthy and kid-friendly – granny smith apples.
Then I picked up some pumpkin bread for a sweet breakfast treat.
Leaving the market, I made a last-minute decision to grab some kale too. I wasn’t sure how it would come off — does everyone even like kale? — but I thought it might be fun to make some kale chips for an afternoon snack so I took the risk.
I also stopped by Cheesetique for a few more items — pimiento cheese spread, rosemary crackers and wine.
With everything carefully nestled in a basket lined with a tea towel, we were ready to hit the road. (Our car ride was about 2 1/2 hours, so I wrapped the cheese in a cooler pack.)
The basket ‘o plenty was well-received by our hosts and proved to be just what we needed after an afternoon walk through downtown Charlottesville.
We discovered that eating the cracker with the cheese and an apple slice on top was an unintended yet delicious flavor combo. When we ran out of crackers, we spread the cheese right on the apples. We didn’t have time to make the kale chips, so I just left the kale with my friends to enjoy at a later time.
Do you have any favorite items for host/hostess gifts? Homemade, store-bought, a mix of both? Here’s a few additional ideas from a story we posted last year.
