MV Big Flea Shop ‘N Drops
It’s back! The MV Big Flea is back in business. If you’re unfamiliar, the MV Big Flea is a huge fundraiser for our local school, Mount Vernon Community School. The actual event doesn’t happen until spring, but PTA volunteers are now collecting AND selling merchandise at the Big Flea temporary showroom. They are holding monthly — and eventually weekly — Shop ‘N Drops to collect donations and get a head start on sales.
So this is good in two ways: First, you can take this opportunity to get rid of stuff that’s cluttering up your house. And second, if you’re looking for a little furniture rehab project, there’s a lot of options to choose from.
Take this story from last year’s Flea, for example. As my friend Mary and I were trolling the streets of Del Ray during bulk trash day eve last April, we found this fabulous antique dresser on the curb. Though our truck was practically spilling over from curb treasures, we knew we couldn’t let this go. Literally minutes after we dropped it off the next day for the Big Flea, this young lady snatched it up for a cool $60. It needed a little love, but it had tons of character and was a solid piece of furniture. Trash to treasure, that’s the Big Flea way.
The first Shop ‘N Drop is this Saturday, November 16, from 2-4 p.m. at 3815 Mt Vernon Ave. — the former home of Fashion K City, in the same shopping center as MOM’s organic market.
I’m one of the parent volunteers so I have the inside scoop on what’s for sale. We’ve already started collecting donations (and selling a few things on Craig’s list too) and this past weekend a few of us went to the store to tidy up for our big opening this weekend.
This dresser is one of my favorite pieces. It’s small so it would be great in a kid’s room, painted and perhaps outfitted with some new knobs. The hinged door doesn’t stay shut so you’d have to do some minor repair.
The Big Flea takes donations of furniture, toys, small appliances, household decor and accessories and sporting equipment. You’re always bound to find some kids furniture too. This table and chair set is in great condition. Clearly, Isabelle has staked her claim.
This dining table has some handsome claw feet, but the top is a little scratched. Just sand and stain.
Again, the first Shop ‘N Drop is Saturday, November 16 from 2-4 p.m. If you have furniture to donate and can’t stop by this Saturday, the Flea is happy to pick up at your house at a convenient time. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to coordinate. Solid wood furniture is more than welcome, even with a few dings or needed repairs, but the Flea cannot accept upholstered furniture (except dining chairs with removable seats) or beds/cribs. The Flea also cannot accept books or clothing.
The store is sparse now but as the months go on — leading up to the April 26, 2014, main event — slowly but surely more and more treasures will arrive awaiting your creative and capable DIY eye.
