Comforts of Home at a Del Ray Bed and Breakfast

Comforts of Home at a Del Ray Bed and Breakfast

From the outside, this house looks like your typical Del Ray bungalow, with a gorgeous front porch and well-cared for lawn. But did you know this is actually a bed and breakfast? Mellenie and Andy’s house is part of a world-wide network of homes (called Airbnb) that enables people to rent out their homes to guests. It’s an easy and affordable way for people to enjoy the comforts of home while on travel and for homeowners to earn some additional income.

Some people rent out their entire home, some just a room. In this case, Mellenie rents out the entire top floor — with a private bedroom and bathroom, it’s an ideal guest space.

The house is literally steps from Mt. Vernon Ave. making it easy for guests to hop on over and enjoy our local shops and restaurants. I especially love how Mellenie included a local map under glass on this side table to help visitors navigate the city.

And although her house has easy access to Metro train or bus, she also provides a bike.

The decor is simple and cozy with a mix of antiques and newer pieces, just like home.

Mellenie and Andy have a private area on the first floor that they keep locked, but they give guests access to the living and dining room. The bright space is filled with lush plants and decorated with warm earth tones.

In the morning, Mellenie offers breakfast, Andy brews the coffee. As the seasons permit, guests can enjoy fresh fruit from the trees out back during their morning meal.

And of course guests are free to relax in one the many outdoor areas including, my favorite, the front porch.

And the peaceful and serene backyard garden.

With no hotels in Del Ray and many homes without guest rooms, the Airbnb network makes great to sense to me. I probably wouldn’t do this with small children around or if I lived alone, but in Mellenie and Andy’s case, they can make a little extra income renting out unused space.

For more photos and a complete list of amenities, visits Mellenie’s Airbnb listing. If you have guests coming for the holidays, this may be the perfect solution, but your guests would be wise to make their reservations at Mellenie and Andy’s house soon.

  1. What great accommodations! My favorite thing about Del Ray is how perfectly imperfect each of the bungalows and cottages are. Everyone’s home has such flavor!
